JAMES BLYTH

USER EXPERIENCE ARCHITECT | USER INTERFACE DESIGN | INTERACTION DESIGN

Hey, my name is James Blyth. I am a User Centered Design student. This year I have been studying with around 12 other people, and we have covered subjects such as User Experience and User Interface design.

We performed user research, design research and created prototypes a multitude of times during our course. Essentially, that means that I design interfaces that are user centric.

About me

Open Music Archive

As part of our Information Architecture and Prototype Development briefs, we were asked to evaluate and improve on the design of one of two websites. I chose Open Music Archive to perform the study on. Through the process of the evaluation and improvement, I discovered that it is not just about redefining the structure and designing for that — but rather a process of guiding the users to find the information that they are looking for and complete their tasks.

Between 10&5

I was part of a team of 5 members who worked on our Interface and Interaction brief. The client was Between 10 and 5, an online platform which posts articles on current South African talent in the creative industry. We were asked to evaluate the current design, perform user and design research, and propose a solution through iterative design. We decided to focus on the mobile website as we discovered many findings pointed to the importance of the mobile space.

Brand Challenge

As a part of the annual ‘Brand Challenge’, students are given a brief from a selected real world client. I was a part of a group of 11 students, composed of BAVC, MAC and UCD students. Over the course of the assignment we had to work together and overcome our individual difficulties to create a coherent submission. Our team was assigned African Bank. We had to create a 360 through-the-line campaign to market their MyWORLD account. As part of the campaign, we decided to redesign the mobile app with a more user centric approach.

Independent Study

Over the course of 2020, the UCD students were assigned 3 briefs that made up our Independent Study. The aims of the study were to identify a context to propose and perform research on, map out common problems and opportunities, generate and evaluate design solutions, and iteratively design and test prototypes until a final design is specified. For the purpose of this study, I created MUZØ, a local music event listing app — due to my ties in the emerging music scene in Cape Town.
