IMRAH BENJAMIN

ILLUSTRATOR | GRAPHIC DESIGNER | CONTENT CREATOR

Hi! I’m Imrah Benjamin, and welcome to my creative space. I studied briefly at Michaelis School of Fine Art, which ultimately led me to the best place ever – Red & Yellow. The last 3 years has taught me patience, to think in a lateral way and how to step out of my comfort zone.

I’m a really passionate person, which makes it even easier loving what I do as an Illustrator and Designer. I’ve always dreamed of having a job, that doesn’t feel like a job but more like a hobby. I’m exactly where I need to be.

About me

Illustrated Merchandise

We had to choose a cause that affects the community and create merchandise to raise awareness. It was to consist of a brand name and logo.

I chose backyard dwellers as my cause, which are individuals who rent a separate house at the back of someone’s home. I chose to go with postcards because it makes the temporary home seem more ‘homey’, which is where the brand name came from. These are accompanied by illustrations of houses they stay in, as well as items they use to make their house more of a home.

Human Centered Illustration

We had to create a visual identity for a brand, and had to consist of a hand-drawn logo.

I chose to redesign an existing brand called Artemis, and designed it around the Greek mythology and their culture. The typeface was of course inspired by the Greek scripture and writing, and so was the logo which symbolises the Artemis, the Goddess of the moon and forest. The colours used, were made to hint the flavour of the drink.

Post human

For this, we had to create an interactive illustrated E-pub that explores our post-human perspective.

I chose to illustrate this story around a dream I had where I escaped to the clouds and felt like utopia. This narrative is about a world filled with poverty, and humans look to the clouds for survival. However, once entering, they morph into a half plant, half human species. A combination of watercolour and gouache was used as the mediums

Self initiated

For this brief, we had to find a problem and come up with a creative solution, this had to include 3 touch points.

I realized within my community, that there was a lack of mental health care services amongst the under-privileged. I decided to create an A5 accordion style book that people could carry around with them. This was done to make things more easily accessible to the target market. It tells a story of a captain at sea who is faced with many obstacles and how he will overcome it. Each element within the narrative symbolize different things in life.

For example, the weather is emotions and the sea is life itself. This story is about how you are the captain of your own ship, in other words, you control your life and what happens next. The two other touch points are Coping Cards in business card size, which comes in 3 variations. The final touch point is a journal.

Brand Challenge 2: Zip Zap

The client wanted a way to get more donors for their organization, Zip Zap. Zip Zap is a NGO, who helps kids with both circus acts and life skills, however they rely solely on donors.

We came up with a campaign, called Flip the Future, which basically about changing the lives of the kids, and how donors could help with it. There were several illustrations, however I was responsible for illustrating the background. The first, is the Parisian sunset, and when flipped over, it is a community in South Africa. The tagline is supposed to read: “You see a performance, we see possibilities,” This was indicative of flipping the future and how their environments could change with the donors help.
