ERIN KEMPER

ART DIRECTOR | ILLUSTRATOR | COPYWRITER

Hi, I’m Erin Kemper, aka The Unapologetic Blonde or the other half of Awkward Turtle Studios. I am a soon-to-be BA Visual Communications graduate. I majored in Art Direction and Minored in Illustration.

My approach to work is personal and often light-hearted. I design campaigns for people. I stand for three things: relevance, quirkiness and wit. I’m detailed oriented, but I can work quickly. I’ve shown myself to be more than an art director, I like going out of my comfort zone and putting on my graphic designer/illustrator cap.

I always make sure my work has a bit of my “DNA” in it (probably from the blood, sweat and tears). My most memorable moment would be the late nights on campus and priceless lessons you learn from others around you. I can’t wait to shake up the advertising world with my unique brand of memes and unexpected insights.

About me

Self Initiated

Brief: Create a long-term solution to end period poverty.

Solution: I created an integrated campaign aimed at keeping disadvantaged girls in school. 13-18-year-old privileged girls will be prompted to reclaim disadvantaged girls’ lost time by activating a QR Code in a limited edition sanitary pad package.

This campaign includes illustrative posters in public toilets and sanitary towel dispensers in schools. I also designed new Always pad packaging and in-store fixtures and created a mobile microsite where girls can choose who to sponsor by donating reusable sanitary products. Finally I designed the reusable sanitary products.

ThreadSwap

Brief: Help Gen Z to create meaningful change with a disruptive campaign.

Solution: ThreadSwap, an app created to convince Gen Z to swap not shop. We’ve taken forgotten threads out of the closet and given them attention-grabbing, on-line voices on Twitter in order to start a conversation and generate buzz, building over a period of three weeks.

At the same time, Instagram posts will document who said what and when. A disruptive outdoor ambient installation, which changes weekly, will be set up to take the tweets off-line, bringing the threads “out of the closet.”

This will all be done to promote the launch of ThreadSwap, the app.

Quarantine Quartet

Brief: Create a solution-driven campaign aimed to boost community morale and uplift South Africans during the time of the COVID-19 level 5 lockdown.

Solution: A campaign encouraging South Africans to buy essentials from Checkers and at the same time make musical instruments out of them. With this, they can entertain themselves or family and friends and beat the lockdown blues, have fun and win something big.

Loeries Aware.org Instagram Challenge

Brief: Create a mobile-first Instagram campaign to combat underage drinking in association with aware.org.za – The Association for Alcohol Awareness and Responsibility.

Solution: By taking existing storytime videos of famous South African Youtubers – and using effects such as blur filters, pixelation, distortion and out-of-sync timing – I aim to simulate the harsh reality and side effects of alcohol abuse and in so doing, create an actual experience triggering the fear of missing out… on life. Because when you drink, you will never know the full story.

Put Some Corks In It

Brief: Create an interactive campaign to get an unexpected target market interested in Corks shoes.

Solution: We were tasked to create an integrated campaign and competition challenging members of Gen Z to add more sustainable clothing and footwear to their closets.
