About me

Self Initiated

Research has shown that advertising within the cosmetics industry, specifically the advertising of makeup has involved the stereotypical representation of women.

In addition to this, such advertisements often negate representations of minority groups such as certain races, cultures, non-gender conforming consumers, etc.

This has resulted in many consumers feeling separated from the “ideal consumer” these brand often portray through their advertising. Not only has this resulted in consumer frustration but also issues regarding body image and the self-esteem of their consumers.

Through my creative solution I hope to encourage and facilitate conversations around the issues within the makeup industry regarding representation through their advertising and the ideals they perpetuate.

Tech Tourist

This brief tasked us in creating a user experience for the Encounters Documentary film festival based on the phrase “Please turn ON your phones”.

Engage Encounters is the ultimate way to fully engage with the Encounters’ documentary film festival from wherever you are in the world. This solution caters to education, community building, and entertainment. Users can easily book shows virtually or find theatres near them using the built in GPS capabilities.

The private chat rooms for each documentary are the perfect setting to cultivate meaningful conversations with the rest of the audience members. Perhaps the most exciting immersive experience of the application are the VR capabilities.

These will be designed around three of the documentaries from the festival. This will allow users the chance to engage with the locations and documentaries in an entirely new and exciting way!

Broadcast Design

This brief tasked us with rebranding the Cape Town TV broadcast organization.

When talking about inclusivity and diversity in South Africa the most common phrase centred around this is the idea of the “rainbow nation”.

However, many people’s idea of the rainbow nation often is solely based on race and often excludes many minority groups and even people who cannot identify with the fixed concept of race.

A possible solution of representing the “rainbow nation” in a more inclusive way is to base said “rainbow” on the South African surroundings and scenery as opposed to the people.

Hencebuilding a colour palette based on the landscapes, flora and fauna, or the neighbourhoods (among others) of South Africa may be a better alternative. In addition to this, colors will correspond to programming based on colour theory and the psychology associated with colors.

Brand Challenge

This project was a group project. The collaborators were Danielle Herbst (myself), Amber Harmse, and Mieke van Rhyn.

This brief tasked us in developing the name, logo and visual world, attitude, and tone, of a Superbalist private label, as well as developing an online launch campaign for the brand.

This was a sportswear brand targeted for everyday active living, for young singles and couples who live an on-the-go lifestyle, living and working in the city.

Based on research many people felt a disconnect with the active wear offerings due to the stereotypical looks pushed by sports brands based on gender, weight, and other factors.

Our solution was a fresh, fluid attitude and approach to sportswear where you have the choice and freedom to define, and redefine, yourself. No standardised sizes. No gender stereotyping. Clothing for real people designed with ‘future fit’ people in mind. no boxes, no limits, no status quo – StatusNO

CTSC

This brief tasked us in designing an event-driven campaign to further the Cape Town Science Centre’s goals.

Which are; “To make a hands-on contribution to South Africa’s future by strengthening its science and technology culture through interactive methods of teaching: to excite the youth and general public about science, and offer educational services to learners and educators across South Africa.”

The concept of this event is centred around the Cape Town Science Centre and the Two Oceans Aquarium joining forces for a combined event. At the forefront of the event is a competition in which grade 11 students may participate in building small interactive displays and experiments to showcase the science behind various elements within the aquarium.
