AMICA HENDRIKZ

GRAPHIC DESIGNER | STRATEGIST | ART DIRECTOR

My name is Amica Hendrikz and I am doing the Higher Certificate in Graphic Design.

I like making work that is fun and interesting, but still minimal. I also always try to ensure that everything I design and all the elements in the design means something. This is my way of bringing my strategy degree into my design work. My strengths are Illustrator and InDesign, and I specifically like corporate identity design and basically any print design because I definitely don’t think print is dead. As mentioned before, I also completed a strategy degree so strategic thinking is also a strength of mine. My practical skills include Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, XD, Animate, and general computer literacy. Some of my other skills include design thinking, interpersonal skills, being a quick learner and organisation skills. I like to think of myself as a helpful, meticulous, reliable, accepting and enthusiastic person.

My most memorable moment at R&Y would have to be starting and completing my first project using the Adobe software, it was amazing seeing it come to life. My hopes and dreams for the future are to join an agency or work in-house at a brand I am passionate about, applying my strategic knowledge and design thinking processes to creative projects.

I hope you enjoy my work!

About me

Infographic

Brief three, infographic and collateral design, focused on designing a linear narrative or infographic promoting an event of our choice, which then had to be rolled out into a piece of collateral. I designed an infographic promoting a specialised meal week at a restaurant in the Cape Town CBD, this specific meal week focused on Middle-Eastern cuisine in the form of a mezze dinner. The poster features a recipe that will be served during the week and the icons I created are the components that make up the dish. My collateral design is a set of spices and condiments relevant to Middle-Eastern cuisine.

Corporate Identity

Brief four, identity design, instructed us to design a logo, business card, livery and CI guide for a new brand. Fig and Honey is a Cape Town based lifestyle brand focussing on women’s essential linen clothing. My final logo design is made up of an ‘F’ and an ‘H’. I created a swing tag where the specific information for each garment can be handwritten. The information cards were designed to be given to each customer when they purchase a garment – these cards have a little more information about the brand.

Publication Design

In brief six, publication design, we were tasked to design a cover, editorial page, contents page and a main article layout of a magazine. I have always been a lover of modern art and I love the imagery that comes along with it. I named the magazine tasteless, stylised as Taste. This name is based off the quote by legendary modern artist Marcel Duchamp, “Taste is the great enemy of art.” International Klein Blue, the blue used throughout the magazine, is a colour that was first mixed by the modern artist Yves Klein and used throughout his artworks.

Online Advertising

Brief seven, online advertising, briefed us to create a social media campaign for the South African organisation Aware – the association for alcohol responsibility and education. For the logo, the beer bottle within the eye shows the reflection of what parents or caregivers are doing in the eyes of their children. For the social media posts Barbie and Ken are shown drinking together, having an argument and ultimately Barbie passes out. The photographed scene represents children reenacting situations they have experienced at home using their Barbies, explaining to parents or caregivers that children mimic what their parents do. App Design

For brief ten, mobile app design, we were tasked with designing a mobile music player. We designed an app called RelaxTrax, targeted at people who suffer from insomnia, anxiety and depression. This app is a gamefied ambient music app, encouraging people to go outside and explore their surroundings. Users can view a map of the area they are currently in and see what “sounds” are around them, for example a waterfall, a specific bird’s song or city sounds. The users then record this sound and can listen to it later, to help with sleeping, anxiety, studying and much more. (Team member: Cody Losper)
