Hi, I am Carly Sutherland and I studied the Higher Certificate in Graphic Design this year. The specializations I enjoyed the most were illustration, website design and animation.
I like to make work that is neat and orderly, even though it might be quite detailed, and of course I always try to add some kind of twist to keep it interesting! My strengths lie in branding: designing a whole look for a business, from its logo, ci guide, packaging, and collateral to its website and social media.
I loved studying at Red and Yellow, and will always remember how hard the college worked to keep our studies going through Lockdown and Covid, and to keep us all motivated to carry on despite everything!
My hope for the future is to work for a brand that I can really get behind, and which inspires me to be the best designer I can be.
The Big Little is a business idea I want to implement one day. It is an online kids’ gifting store, which specializes in the experience of receiving a gift – from delivery to opening the gift to the actual present inside – hence the tagline “What’s Inside?” The logo and aesthetic are inspired by brightly coloured, cheap sticker packs you used to get in the 90’s, printed badly so the colours don’t match the outlines. The bright colours and fun images appeal to the kids, while the nostalgic element it creates appeals to the grown-ups buying the gifts.
Yoga for Giraffes is a childrens’ book about Yoga that I wrote and hand-illustrated last year, which was published by Penguin Random House this year.
I made an animation to promote the book being available in stores now.
Please follow @yogaforgiraffes to find out more, or get your copy from Exclusive Books, Bargain Books, Readers Warehouse or loot.co.za.
Identity Parade is an online thrifting platform that allows sellers to create a mini shop-within-a-shop which they can customize to match their style, or ‘identity’.
To create the images and video, I cut and pasted elements to create a collage aesthetic. For instance, the models are free stock photos which I cut and pasted original photos of my clothes onto, like paper dolls, and then added a grainy retro filter over.
I used Wix to create this website.

Scape Magazine is a high-end publication focusing on indoor plant landscaping. Its landscape format echoes the name. Its modern and minimal approach appeals to its market, who are interested in modern home decor and design.
Note the long leg of the ‘p’ in the masthead – this represents the roots and growth direction of a plant, as well as playing a role in the layout of the cover, balancing out the vertical coverlines.

This infographic design serves as an invitation to a Greek Wedding, and uses Ancient Greek iconography in a tongue-in-cheek way. The wedding gift is a coaster, printed with the circular icon designs on them. I vectorized ink sketches to create the icon designs, so it still has a hand-drawn look and feel.
